It was a dark stormy night. From my veranda I saw a lamp post doing its duty. Stubborn and unshakable, lighting up the road without any aberration. The storm was fierce and the rain went from light drizzle to deluge within minutes. But the lamp post stood on its ground as if mocking the storm.
This reminded me of always doing the right thing in any condition. Be it rain, snow, or clear weather, the lamp post always provides light without any interruption or distraction. This is one trait that defines a true professional. People do the right things when the conditions are favorable, however, sticking to the principles and values and doing the right thing without been interrupted or distracted by the conditions make a true professional.
A professional not necessarily be person who has a professional degree or is a doctor, lawyer, architect etc. A true professional is any person who sticks to the ethics and principles of professionalism. A bus driver who always makes sure that the bus is never late in any weather condition is also a true professional. In the process he might have annoyed some passengers by not entertaining their request to stop the bus off the bus stop. By sticking to the ethics and principles, the bus driver has set an example for others, earned the respect and people look forward to him.
In essence professionalism is not limited to those with professional titles but extends to anyone who embodies the principles and values. Whether it’s a bus driver ensuring punctuality or any individual committed to their ethical standards, true professionals earn respect and set a positive example for others. They remind us that genuine professionalism is defined not by one’s title, but by one’s dedication to doing the right thing, regardless of the circumstances.
